Damage is applied when players or creatures are hit by attacks, causing the loss of Hitpoints (or Mana when protected by Magic Shield or an Energy Ring). Sources include weapon attacks, spells, runes, or environmental hazards like quest or boss mechanics. Understanding how damage is delivered and mitigated helps players choose optimal armor, shielding, and combat strategies.
Overview
There are three main categories of damage:
Physical Damage: usually from melee attacks and Distance Weapons, but also from certain runes and spells.
Magical Damage: caused by most offensive spells and many runes.
Agony Damage: more rare, unmitigable ("true damage").
Blocking and Mitigation
- Shielding (block): some physical damage can be partially or completely blocked by a target’s Shielding. Magical damage cannot be blocked.
- Armor: always reduces physical damage. Magical damage is unaffected by armor.
- Mana protection: when Magic Shield or an Energy Ring is active, incoming damage is converted into mana loss instead.
- Immunities: many creatures are immune to certain types of magical or physical damage. Examples immune to physical damage include Ghost, Pirate Ghost, Spectre, Phantasm, and Dipthrah. Some creatures are immune to all damage types, like The Librarian.
Special Cases
Most offensive spells and runes deal magical damage. Exceptions that deal physical damage include the Explosion Runes and spells such as Physical Strike. Some runes and spells apply additional effects, such as Life Drain, Poison, or Agony.
Damage Colors
Each damage type appears with a distinct color in the game client, allowing quick identification. While Magic Shield or an Energy Ring is active, damage transferred to mana will use the mana/mana-drain color.
