Player versus Environment (PvE) is the term used to describe a player's interaction with game content that was designed by the game developer (CipSoft). Its opposite is Player versus Player (PvP).
PvE and PvP
As an MMORPG, Tibia's content is primarily PvE, which means that in most cases advancing your character in levels, skills, gear, achievements and other mechanics is dependent only on the Environment or positive player-to-player interaction (e.g. having a team for a Boss fight). PvP, on the other hand, is focused on fighting other players, even though this most often than not means making good use of the Environment (choosing a battle ground, luring wild creatures on enemies etc.).
In Tibia, the Game Worlds that are appropriate for players that want to have an exclusive* PvE experience are the Optional PvP worlds. In these worlds, PvP is only possible with both sides agree to it using the War System or the Duelling Arena. On Open PvP worlds, players are susceptible to being attacked by other players at any moment, but this is strongly regulated by the Skull System. Hardcore PvP worlds have no system to prevent Player versus Player interactions, on the contrary, on this game worlds PvP is part of the daily routine.
* Even on Optional PvP worlds, there are still many ways players can influence one another due to Tibia being an open world game. On these worlds, disputes are usually held by means of Luring, Kill Stealing (KS), trapping and general sabotaging of bosses and events. Some of these actions used to be considered Destructive Behavior and illegal in the past by CipSoft, but since these are very complicated to control, even if volunteer Gamemasters still existed, this type of rule is no longer enforced. To diminish these problems, CipSoft implemented several game features, for example anti-luring mechanisms. Nevertheless, Destructive Behavior is still often considered a problem for many Optional PvP players since it can be very distressing when done by an organized group of high level players towards individuals or smaller groups.
Content Differences
While the map of Tibia is identical on all Game Worlds, some game features are only really useful in PvP situations. These features can be accessed in all worlds but are rarely used since they were designed focusing on PvP.
- Paralyse Rune - because most strong creatures are immune to Paralysis;
- Twist of Fate - because it's only applied on PvP deaths;
- Vibrancy imbuements - because during PvE players will usually heal before triggering the imbuement;
- Cleanse charm - because there are better choices of defending charms for PvE.
